Events | King Esther’s Ball(s): A Gender-Bending Purim

Saturday, March 3, 2012. 10:00 pm-2:00 am

Drawing inspiration from the gender-typing, misogyny, easily wounded male pride, and unexpected female heroism featured in the Megillah, the Mile End Chavurah is proud to present King Esther’s Ball, a gender-bending Purim costume party.

Revisit, re-experience and reinterpret the whole conce…pt of gender. Audacity and full-on cross-dressing welcome. Most importantly, we want you to have fun with it.

Ladies: come as Elvis, an Orthodox priest, a Mexican mariachi singer, a (male) rabbi, Don Draper, etc. Gentleman: come as a Catholic nun, a midwife with newborn baby in hand, Mary Poppins, Golda Meir (wait – right category?), and so forth.

Or dress according to an expression of gender that you’re not accustomed to: sensitive, bookish men, unleash your inner jock! Outdoorsy women, become a shoulder-padded 1980s corporate type in a skirt suit! Couples: create a new gender configuration! Become two men, two women, one man and one woman, several variously gendered people, etc.

Expect: a beauty pageant; a confessional; a photo booth; hamantaschen; a DJ; some creative reinterpretations of the Megillah; and assorted surprises.

This event is BYOBB: Bring Your Own Biblical Beverage. Suggestions: wine, barley beer, rye, etc. (You can also bring non-Biblical Beverages, such as hard liquor or Dr. Pepper.)
Ladies and gentlemen (and everyone in between): start collecting your pantyhose, bowties, girdles, and fake mustaches.

La Tour Prisme, 550 Beaumont, #516

Admission:
$8 for Mile End Chavurah members (with advance purchase)/ $10 for non-members.  Evryone welcome!!
