Shortwave | Yom Kippur Special

Welcome to Shtetl on the Shortwave’s Yom Kippur Special.  Reflect on the year to come with your favourite alternative Jewish radio show.

This past summer, Rabbi Ronnie Cahana suffered a stroke changing both him and his family.  Although Rabbi Cahana is not able to speak, he communicates through blinking and mouthing words.  This week, a few days before Yom Kippur, Shtetl visited with the spirited rabbi and his wife Karen Knie-Cahana at the Montreal Neurological Institute.  Tune in to hear our conversation.

For the hippies and those who like a little preaching while they lather up, get the inside scoop on the entrepreneurial, spiritual and radical Emanuel H. Bronner of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap.  Bronner escaped Nazi Germany and an American insane asylum, and went on to start one of the hippest, most socially conscious soap companies in the world.

And, for tradition’s sake, we have Shtetl’s favourite indie-pop cantor, Daniela Gesundheit of Snowblink singing us the most beautiful rendition of the Kol Nidre you’re likely to hear on the airwaves this year!

Finally, check out Guilty Alibi, a brave video confession for Yom Kippur by Montrealer Kelly Keenan at Shtetl Magazine.
Wishing you all lots of new beginnings preceded by lots of hardcore repenting this holy holiday weekend!

Music in this episode by Yael Naim (New Soul: Steve Jobs RIP), cantor Daniela Gesundheit, Regina Spektor, Abayudaya Jews of Uganda,  and the last song is Oh Abraham by Little Birdie.
