Shortwave | graphic details on shtetl

Self portrait by graphic artist Miss Lasko Gross

Tune in this week and meet two of the funny, talented and  very revealing cartoon artists featured in the San Fransisco Cartoon Museum exhibit  Graphic Details:  Confessional Comics by Jewish Women.

Miriam Libicki lives in Vancouver and has worked for many years on the autobiographical comic jobnik! about her time as a volunteer in the Israeli Defense Forces.

“Miriam Libicki, an American Jewish girl from a religious home, enlists in the Israeli Army one summer against everyone’s better judgment. Many qualities seem to make her unsuited for IDF life: her Hebrew isn’t great, she is shy and passive, and she has a tendency to fall in love with anything that moves. If that weren’t enough, the Al Aqsa uprising, a.k.a the second Palestinian Intifada, erupts a few weeks after she is stationed as a secretary in a remote Negev base. Will Miriam survive threats of terrorism, the rough IDF culture, and not least, her horrible taste in men? (Quoted from Libicki’s website realgonegirl.com)

Laurie Sandell is a freelance writer for Glamour, Esquire, GQ and many other fine publications,  and she is the author of The Imposter’s Daughter: A True Memoir, a graphic novel about growing up with a father whom she loves dearly, but who has lied to her her whole life about his identity.

Meet both of these talented storytellers on Shtetl on the Shortwave.

Music by  Avi Buffalo, Karolina, Y-Love and the Barry Sisters.

P.S. Feel free to listen to anohter episode of Shtetl on the Shortwave like Watching Over the Dead featuring the shomer from Paperman’s Funeral Home.
