On this episode of Shtetl on the Shortwave we talk with Jennifer Podemski and Howard Adler. Jennifer, an actress, producer and director, has a role in Sarah Polley’s upcoming film Take This Waltz , and was the producer of Mocassin Flats. Howard is a writer, filmmaker and co-Director of Asinabka, a Festival of Indigenous Film and New Media. Both are First Nation and Jewish. This episode is a part of Indigenous Shtetl a special edition of Shtetl Magazine.
Music played on the show:
Nunaga by Beatrice Deer
Butterfly by Elisapie Isaac
I’m an Indian by Fanny Brice
Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by Robbie Robertson/The Band
Killa Peg by Wab Kinew (In the end there wasn’t time to play this track, but thought you might want to check it out anyway!)

Amazing… as usual. Good work, T., Liked the guests and the music.
Whoa…just finishing the episode now and the closing song, “I’m an Indian” by Fanny Brice is so contrary to the rest of the podcast, which I really enjoyed. If it came with some commentary on how Indigenous people have been portrayed by Jewish artists in music and movies then it could have made sense. Check out this doc: http://www.reelinjunthemovie.com. It would be great to see another episode on the theme!
Hi Sarah,
Thanks so much for checking out this episode of Shtetl on the Shortwave. The song at the end by Fanny Brice was meant to send people to read “Jewish Redface” an article in the magazine by Rachel Rubinstein all about how Jews have represented “Indians” in art. Please check it out: http://shtetlmontreal.com/2012/06/01/jewish-redface/
You were totally right in your reaction to that song.
Cheers and thanks for the comment,
Tamara
