Events | Open House at the Kiever Synagogue (Toronto)

Sunday, February 19, 2012. 2:00-5:00 pm

Drop in all afternoon to see the beautiful historic sanctuary of the Kiever Synagogue, speak with Sara Ferdman Tauben – author of a new book on Montreal’s early synagogues built at the same time as this Kensington Market treasure – and view an exhibition of stunning photographs by David Kaufman, installed for one weekend only, and meet the photographer!

The event is presented by Makom: Creative Downtown Judaism, a grassroots community integrating arts, activism, spirituality and learning.

Sanctuary Tour, 3 PM

Sara talks about the architectural features of the sanctuary looking at the Kiever in relation to architectural precedents built in 19th century Europe and synagogues of the same time period in Montreal.

100th Birthday Party for the Kiever, 3 PM

Fun for the whole family from ages 1 to 100 with stories, Yiddish songs, a kids-eye tour of David’s photo exhibition and birthday cake! Parents, Bubbies and Zaydies: join the kids in rediscovering Kensington Market at the time when the Kiever was built or join the “big kids” for a tour of the sanctuary.
