Events | Magillah

Sunday, October 23, 2011. 8:30pm

Winner of the Radio-Canada Etoiles-Galaxie Prize in 2009, Magillah (formerly The Merovitz Project) is a Yiddish/Klezmer band directed by Montreal accordionist-arranger Henri Oppenheim (Kleztory) and featuring lead singer Michelle Heisler. With the talents of Julie Triquet, violinist extraordinaire (I Musici de Montreal), superb bassist Mathieu Deschenaux and the brilliantly versatile Eric Breton on percussion, Magillah explores the vocal repertoire of Eastern European Jews (in Hebrew and in Yiddish) with both traditional klezmer melodies and original compositions.

Magillah places emphasis on the beauty of the Yiddish language and its surperb sonorities and vibrant colour. It is at once intense, deep, dancing and funny.

This Sunday, they will  play with special guests Vanessa Marcoux on violin and Michael Emenau on vibraphone.
