Shortwave | Hipsters & Hassids on Shtetl

What happens when two Jewish worlds – Hassidic and secular – live side by side in a trendy, mutli-cultural neighbourhood of Montreal?

Tune in this week to Shtetl on the Shortwave with guest Mark Slutsky: local writer, and director of the comedic short film Sorry, Rabbi. Starring Jessica Pare and Jacob Tierny,   Sorry, Rabbi explores the relationship between a secular Mile End Jew and his Hassidic neighbours following a misunderstanding that occurs on their shared street.

Also, in keeping with this week’s theme, The Mile End Chavurah and ShtetlMontreal.com proudly present   BABEL: Jews and Neighbours in Mile End, a discussion about the delicate relationship between the Hasidic community of Outremont/Mile End and its secular neighbours – both Jewish and non-Jewish. Join the conversation with panelists  Shauna van Praagh, McGill Law Professor specializing in religion and law, Mayer Feig, spokesperson for a local Hasidic synagogue; and Mireille Silcoff, National Post columnist and founding editor of Guilt & Pleasure Quartely.

Finally, word out to Jason Rosenblatt and to all the amazing musicians who are rocking our city this week at The Montreal Jewish Music Festival.  Tonight is your last chance to check out  world class acts like Andy Statman,  legendary bluegrass mandolinist at The Rialto,  and the closing party with DJs at The Sala Rossa.
Thanks for making Shtetl your source for alternative Jewish arts culture!
